BoardGameGeek is the hub of activity for all things boardgaming on the internet. It is a database of every board game ever made (and many still on their way!) and it allows users to rank games, give them weightings of complexity, and leave feedback and thoughts for others. It is without a doubt the most useful tool out there for any board game enthusiast!
And out of all the ranking and rating and chatting and discussing comes a few very fine lists to maybe give you an idea of where you might venture next in the world of hobby boardgaming. The first of these is the BGG Top 100!
There are many ways to browse BoardGameGeek, and simply clicking on Browse>Games will take you to this list, but I have pasted it for you below. These are the most highly ranked games on BGG, current at FEB, 2017.
Q: Are these the best games ever? Should I just start my collection here?
A: No! There are SO many amazing and wonderful games that never see the Top 100, or even the Top 1000, but it is an excellent place to start. Many of these games represent some of the best of a particular mechanic or style or genre, and so the list gives a lot of good variety.
Q: Have you played all these games, Dean?
A: Not even! I think I'm at about 65/100. Lots of good things to go!
Q: Are they all in stock?
A: Sadly, no - a few are out of print, lots are out of stock, and others appear twice, such as Viticulture (and the Essential Edition) and War of the Ring (1st and 2nd Edition). Titles not listed on the site appear in red.
Q: Where do the links go?
A: The links for each item on the list will take you to the BGG Listing for that title to let you have a look around and explore more about the game.
Q: What is the Avg. Rating?
A: These are the average ratings given to a game by BGG users. They can be skewed and messed with, so don't pay TOO much attention to them, but they can give a good guide.
I hope you like the category! I'll do a 100-200 and 200-300 shortly.
